Only a handful of books dedicated to fish have made it to the best sellers’ lists. Paul Greenberg’s “Four Fish” has done just that, and I recently had the pleasure of reading it.

Mr Greenberg examines in turn the four main fish used for human consumption – salmon, bass, cod, and tuna. At its core, the book is about the way humans interact with fish, and how that interaction has radically transformed the reality of several sea species. While capturing much of the complexity of the matter, he tries to show how human activity has affected the world of fisheries, and examines avenues for a more sustainable future. An interesting point made in the book is that the solution has to be political, and that relying only on the consumers making the right choices has proven rather insufficient over the years. One may disagree with certain arguments put forward by Greenberg, but he engages in an open and thrilling debate.
