Friday last week, after the meeting of the Council where EU Ministers agreed quotas for the Baltic Sea, I took the time to watch “Game over – Facing our Ocean’s Point of No Return” .

This short but comprehensive documentary outlines well the urgency of concrete actions to counter the depletion of fish stocks and the severe consequences that any delay could trigger, be that in South America, in the North Sea or in the Baltic. Cod overfishing in Canadian waters, leading to the overmultiplication of sea urchins and the resulting damages for the whole ecosystem is just an example and the fact that this happened far away must not trick us. It was not imaginable even before the economic crisis. The difficulties of crisis gave the European structure a lot of problems, but also opportunities.

But are our decisions effective enough? Read the full entry

The 13th, 14th and 15th of December 2010 were important days for the future of fisheries in the European Union. After two days of ministerial negotiations, all EU Member States were able to come to an agreement with the Commission on the most effective way to secure a sustainable future for our fisheries sector.  I came to this Council with a clear goal in mind: to do everything necessary in order to secure sustainable fishing stocks for the future. To be successful in this respect, highlighting the necessity of heeding to the scientific advice for fish stocks, was paramount. Read the full entry
