Addressing demographic change: a socio-economic challenge and opportunity for Europe

We are living for longer. That is all thanks to medical progress and lifestyle changes brought about by progress. In today’s EU, women aged 65 can expect to live another 20 years (yet men only 17!). A key concern is what those 20 years after retirement age will really hold for the elderly. Will they be able to remain healthy, active and independent and truly enjoy those years?

It is a pressing question for us, both as private individuals but also as a society. In parallel to the extension of life expectancy fertility rates are declining, consequently the ratio between people at work and remaining population will change from 4-1 today to 2-1 by 2050 in average in Europe. The growth in the number of the elderly is both a societal and economical challenge.

To launch the debate on “Spectrum for wireless innovation in Europe” (Digital Agenda Assembly Workshop 17#daa11spectrum) Eric Klasen (Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality, Medtronic International Trading Sàrl) has provided us with his recommendations on spectrum needs for wireless eHealth innovations. Please join the discussion and provide your input by commenting on this blog post until June 10!

SPECTRUM RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WIRELESS eHEALTH INNOVATIONS:

 1. Going forward, medical therapeutic and diagnostic applications will require, at a minimum, additional spectrum on a shared basis relative to a primary service. This type of regulatory structure will protect critical wireless medical applications from interference produced by Short Range Devices, digital systems and other sources of interfering radio emissions because it provides a legal basis for spectrum authorities to take any necessary action to address the interference issue. As the Digital Agenda Assembly (#daa11eu) is fast approaching, I am looking forward to an interesting discussion with stakeholders and key spectrum policy makers on the spectrum aspects of wireless innovation in Europe.

In the upcoming workshop on “Spectrum for wireless innovation in Europe” we will discuss the regulatory challenges that result from innovative technologies and the more intensive use of spectrum. In particular, we want to focus on developments beyond the important area of electronic communications services that most people readily associate with wireless innovation and look at other internal market sectors.
