Originally from a molecular biology background, Johanna has several years of experience in academic research laboratories including the CRG / Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, the GMI / Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology and the IMP / Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna. However, through her love of traveling, she became increasingly interested in social, economic and environmental issues and in understanding the bigger picture. Johanna obtained two further master degrees in Economics and Agriculture, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis where she recognised the need for systems thinking. On the side, she organised events including TEDxBarcelonaChange, SenseCamp Barcelona, and TEDxBrussels. After one year at the European Commission’s DG RTD working on research projects in fields all across the agri-food chain, Johanna returned to DG JRC where she is currently involved in a foresight study on sustainable food systems. Johanna has a particular interest in the development of sustainable smart cities.
