Combating sexual abuse of children

2011-05-20 In Sweden 23 women and one man have been charged today on involvement in a children pornography case. This is a major case in Sweden and due to the fact that there are so many women special attention is given to this case.

The proposal I presented last year to combat sexual exploitation of children is now being negotiated with the Council and the Parliament. It is my greatest hope that we will reach an agreement as soon as possible on this Directive. The Directive covers action on different fronts to make it easier to combat these crimes. It should for example be possible to prosecute for grooming (the on-line solicitation of children for sexual purposes) and prosecute so called “sex tourists” within the EU even if the crime was committed outside the union. Member States shall also take the necessary measures to obtain the removal of internet pages containing or disseminating child pornography and when this is not possible, because the website for example is located outside the EU, they shall put in place mechanisms to block access to these websites. The proposal also calls for protection of child victims against additional trauma resulting from interviews by law enforcement and judicial authorities, or having to be exposed in front of the public in court. The children shall also be helped by a free lawyer. These actions will most likely not serve as comfort to abused children but it is about time that we show that we are serious in combating sexual exploitation of children.
