I spent a very interesting morning with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Polish Premier Donald Tusk. We toured CeBIT 2013 in Hannover looking at a range of – often German – companies and initiatives (Software AG, T-Mobile, SAP, Fraunhofer and so on).
The Chancellor and I are very keen to do more to push start -ups, to create better enabling conditions for them. And we are both worried about the digital ICT skills gap in Europe.
There is more to come on these points, but it looks like our Grand Coalition on Digital Skills and Jobs could not have come at a better time.

Ich habe heute einen interessanten Morgen mit Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel und dem polnischen Premierminister Donald Tusk verbracht. Auf unserem gemeinsamen Messerundgang auf der CeBIT 2013 in Hannover haben wir uns zahlreiche – überwiegend deutsche – Unternehmen und Initiativen näher angeschaut (Software AG, T-Mobile, SAP, Fraunhofer usw.).
Die Bundeskanzlerin und ich wollen bessere Bedingungen für Start-Ups schaffen und sind sehr besorgt über den Mangel an qualifizierten IKT-Fachkräften in Europa.
Es gibt also viel zu tun – in jedem Fall hätte unsere “Große Koalition für digitale Arbeitsplätze” nicht zu einem günstigeren Moment starten können.

While I will try to contact you via email, I write this as alternative way to reach you that might have a higher chance of being read.
Fixing unemployment is as simple as convincing rich people to set the example by working less so that other people will feel comfortable following. It also has many other benefits such as a reduction in ‘wasteful’ government spending.
The reason there is uncertainty about whether intelligent people will support it, and why this message comes in this format, is that there is a potential downside for developed countries in that the price of oil would go up due to greater demand from emerging markets.
The difference between this and the work-share used in Germany is that this would target highly skilled workers and would be intended to last beyond a period of poor economic performance; the only reason a society should want to force people to work long hours is during a period of war, which is something we could expect to avoid if this idea is used. (For example it would have prevented WWII.)

Das gibt mir zu denken, denn schliesslich sollte sie wissen, dass das mittlerweile katastrophale Bildungssystem in Deutschland gerade im Bereich IT gar keine vernünftigen Leute zu Tage bringen kann.
Was dort an den Unis gelehrt wird ist schon zu Beginn eines Semesters veraltet – bis der Absolvent fertig ist, kann er all sein “Wissen” in die Tonne treten, weil davon nichts mehr zu gebrauchen ist. Solange genau in diesen schnell wandelnden Bereichen die Bürokratie und Vorschriftenlage ist wie sie ist, wird sich da auch nichts ändern.
Hier gehört eine grundlegende Reform auf den Tisch. Im IT Bereich bedarf es Spezialisten und am besten Autodidakten, die sich von klein auf für dieses Thema interessieren und selbst am Ball bleiben. Warum gibt es keine Auswahlverfahren, die es ermöglichen, dass solch ein junger Mensch trotzdem studieren kann, obwohl er kein Abitur hat, nur weil er vielleicht kein Sprachtalent ist oder in sonstigen Fächern Defizite hat?
Dieses völlig veraltete System blockiert unser ganzes Land – und nicht nur im IT Bereich. Viele Grüße aus dem einstmal so fortschrittlichen Deutschland, was in den letzten jahren an seiner eigenen Bürokratie erstickt.
