FIXING COPYRIGHT OFFERS A WORLD OF DIGITAL OPPORTUNITIES

Important speech today at the Forum d’Avignon about how the digital world is an opportunity not a threat to our cultures.

Culture is the fabric of life and it cannot be separated from the society in which it is born or the people of that society. So the systems which support our culture – like copyright – need to keep up with changing times.

Today that means we need action to promote a legal digital Single Market in Europe. Today our fragmented copyright system is ill-adapted to the real essence of art, which has no frontiers. Instead that system has ended up giving a more prominent role to intermediaries than to artists. It irritates you the public and leaves a vacuum which is served by illegal content, depriving artists of their well-deserved remuneration. It may suit some vested interests to avoid a debate, or to demonise you, but that is not a sustainable approach.  Let us have that debate and get rid of the cultural Berlin walls that exist now.

I humbly believe that the vast majority of workers do their job and do not charge fees for their work, go to work every day. The copyright can not be a constant compensation for work, or limiting the science or culture or art after money, denying the less fortunate.
A musician must make their money work on stage and the free publication that will appeal to music concerts.
A writer may receive a portion of every book ever bound even that does not appear or is charged for as long as you have requested do, then your digital should be free.Scientists and explorers should receive for their work on assessing the difficulty, time required and its value to humanity throughout the world, I’m no economist, but surely a good economist will find a solution.

It’s certainly refreshing to read something like this. Seems like the industry around cultural products wants to stick to an outdated scheme of exclussive regional agreements, fixing prices and limiting commerce.
A good example are Spanish publishers. They are not present on the two main ebook distribution platforms: Apple’s iBooks or Amazon’s Kindle. But they claim that these devices do encourage piracy.
I do not defend piracy at all. Creators have the right to get paid for their work. But seems that the “cultural industry” prefers to act like ostriches and ask for more levies on devices instead of embracing new (and I’m sure, lucrative) market opportunities.
    Insane.
