Today the Commission took a decision against Intel that shows just how seriously we take the level playing field, consumer welfare and innovation.
There is no excuse for hurting consumers or wrecking the level playing field – that is what Intel did over more than five years in abusing its dominant market position (more than 70% of the global market) in computing chips called ‘x86 central processing units’ (CPUs).
The record fine of €1.06 billion is a clear market signal that we won’t tolerate this serious wrongdoing from any firm.  Not one euro of this money will stay in Brussels by the way - it all goes back to European taxpayers.
My message is that we are continuing to enforce the antirust rules on all fronts.  Competition will help Europe recover.
On that line of thinking – I am very pleased to read the speech of Christine Varney (my opposite number in the United States) yesterday.  To hear that the US will be pushing antitrust enforcement with vigour is good news for the global economy.
Competition is so important for all of us - more choices, more innovation, lower prices - we have to keep fighting for these outcomes.
