Connecting with my Young Advisers

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012
I meet my young advisers....

I meet some of Europe's most energetic & thoughtful entrepreneurs...

Yesterday, I had my second meeting with some “Young Advisers” – a group of young Europeans on the front line of the Digital Agenda – from commerce to education and science. The digital revolution – with the right support – will lift Europe out of this crisis. And connecting with this kind of real-life experience is essential if the Digital Agenda is to succeed.

What a lot of energy and focus in one room! They certainly weren’t shy in coming forward and telling me not just what we did well, but what we can do better – exactly what I was hoping for.

So what did I learn? Well, it’s clear that for the younger generation the crisis is changing the jobs landscape – it’s now a place where comfortable public sector jobs are no longer an easy option; online opportunities are offering a real and attractive alternative. But we – the EU and Member State governments – need to make it easier. Read the full entry

Making it easier to buy online: our action plan for e-Commerce

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Are you one of the 40% of Europeans who purchases online each year?

If so you’re probably aware of the benefits of doing so – but also of some disadvantages. Online shopping and services can mean better choice, easier to use, easier to compare prices: all in all, better value for consumers. But some will worry about issues like, how can I pay for my product safely? If it’s a physical product, will it be delivered in time (and intact)? And what do I do if there’s a problem with the order? Others, unable to find the content they want lawfully, may turn to illegal content.

Unlocking the goldmine: new legal proposals to open up Europe’s public sector

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Imagine we had a resource available that could stimulate new innovations, a market worth tens of billions of euros, and increase the transparency and governance of public life.

We do – it’s the data held by Europe’s public institutions. And today I announced legal proposals to unlock this treasure trove. Benefiting not just web entrepreneurs, but journalists, academics, anyone who has a smartphone or uses public services.

The test site for the Commission's own data portal - going live 2012

ICT delivering 45% reduction in mortality rates – great news from the UK

Friday, December 9th, 2011

I was very pleased to read recently about the promising results of a programme in the UK which shows the enormous potential if we integrate ICT into health care more deeply. The figures from the study are incredible: showing telehealth, used correctly, can deliver a 20% reduction in emergency admissions, 14% reduction in bed days, an 8% reduction in tariff costs and an incredible 45% reduction in mortality rates. That’s impressive stuff. Imagine what this could mean if we could do it at European level.

Best of all, the study suggests that these telehealth results can be transferred to other locations –  and this transferability to a national and a European scale is just what we’re looking for in the European Innovation Partnership on active and healthy ageing.

With the UK pilot being such a success and with the first deployment phase – to 50,000 people – now over, the UK’s next step is to deploy nationwide to three million at-risk patients. This large-scale commitment should deliver large-scale results.

Ultimately, this shows more than ever that innovative solutions, with technology and ICTs fully integrated into care services, can make the lives of terminally ill patients better. And help patients with care needs lead a normal life.

eHealth is undoubtedly delivering savings and radically reducing mortality rates. But such a large-scale deployment can only be achieved if all stakeholders work together: governments working with industry, and with social care and professional partners.

Innovation delivering better lives for people – this is just the type of radical change we need!

Horizon 2020: an €80 billion wake-up call for innovation in Europe

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Did you know that a €120 million research investment by the EU enabled the 3G mobile market that we know today, worth €250 billion? That is just one example of how worthwhile investment in research and innovation can be.

And so today is great news for Europe’s innovators – and Europe’s economy. The EU Commission is proposing €80 billion in funding for research and innovation over seven years. The programme – to be known as “Horizon 2020” will make it easier to seek funding, easier to bring good ideas to market, and easier for Europe to invest in innovation for the future. EU ROBOTICS WEEK

Say 'Hi' to Flash the Robot

When you think of “robots” you might think of some comical 1950’s vision of the future – or maybe something from Isaac Asimov, or Star Wars.

In reality, modern robots have a variety of uses, helping people out in many areas of life. From tasks to dangerous for humans – like defusing bombs. To tasks that humans just find plain boring – like doing the vacuuming. To medical applications, where robots can do things more precisely and help save lives: like the EU funded ROBOCAST project, that could in time perform vital keyhole brain surgery – potentially easing the lives of the millions who suffer from tumours, epilepsy, Parkinson’s or depression.

And it’s a booming industry. Over 2 million service robots for the private sector were sold last year – a number which could balloon to over 14 million by 2014. Overall it’s an industry worth over 15 billion euros per year – and around one fifth of the demand is in Europe.

This week is EU Robotics Week – and to celebrate there are events all over Europe all showing the contributions which robotics can make to society. Flash (shown in the picture) is on display with 20 of his pals at Robotville in London’s Science Museum.  But all in all, there are over 340 events across 17 countries – so check out an event near you!

Bringing Europe’s cultural treasures to a new generation

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Imagine you have gold in a vault but you forgot where the key is.  In times of crisis, there are not many treasures that Europe can use to boost growth and prosperity. There is one treasure we have however in Europe, for which we need a new digital key: our cultural heritage – the many millions of historical artefacts and works of art which sit in Europe’s museums, galleries, and libraries – which is unparalleled across the world. Public data for all – opening up Europe’s public sector

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

I’ve said before that I’m a big fan of open data. Opening up public data will get citizens involved in society and political life, increase the transparency of public administration, and improve public decision making. Those benefits cannot be overestimated. And public data can be used in many unexpected ways, too: as the father of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee, put it: “if people put data onto the web… it will be used by other people to do wonderful things in ways that they never would have imagined”.

There’s a huge amount of money here, and a huge amount of opportunity. I want to see Europe at the forefront of this development. So I’m going to be taking action to open up Europe’s public sector, by promoting creative and innovative re-use of public data.

Connecting Europe: Commission offers broadband a boost of €50-100 billion

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

It’s my dream to get Every European Digital. And that means everyone needs to be covered by fast broadband connections.

The economic benefits are clear: increasing broadband penetration by just 10 percentage points can boost GDP by 0.9 – 1.5%. But we face problems in delivering new networks: insufficient investment, problems in accessing capital, and a weak business case for operators to roll out everywhere. And we also face difficulty in making online public services available across Europe.

So the European Commission has today proposed a boost which could leverage total broadband investment between €50 and €100 billion, and will also provide funding for pan-European digital public services. Read the full entry

The first-ever Digital Agenda Assembly

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Me getting some tips from my young advisers

We’re just approaching the end of our first ever Digital Agenda Assembly.  It’s been a fulfilling – if action-packed – couple of days.

For those of you who don’t know, the DAA is a staging post for the Agenda – one year after we launched it. So a chance to review what’s been done, and a chance to remind ourselves why the project is so important; a “State of the Digital Union”. Read the full entry
