In October, the European Commission released proposals on how to minimise the climate impacts of biofuel production. For the first time, the estimated global land conversion impacts – Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) – will be considered when assessing the greenhouse gas performance of biofuels.
Leading Environment journalist, Sonja Van Renssen, met Nuša Urbancic, Programme Manager for Fuels at Transport & Environment (T&E), to discuss the Commission’s proposals on ILUC.
“Introducing full carbon accounting, including ILUC, would have benefited the second generation industry more”.
