Brussels ban on pints of shandy

As from 1 October 1999 it will be a criminal offence for a pub to sell mixed drinks such as shandy in a pint. (The Times, 27 January 1999, p9)

Shandy, provided it is made from draught lager or bitter, can be sold in a pint glass. Whilst the rest of the EU uses the metric measurement system when buying drinks in bars, the UK has a derogation for the use of the unit ‘pint’ when serving draught beer and draught cider in pubs.
