Brussels to tax every phone line £30

September 10th, 2000

Brussels is poised to set off a tax bombshell – a £30-a-year levy on every private, business and mobile phone in the EU … The tax being planned by Brussels officials would apply to all 200 million lines in the 15 EU countries…
Financial Mail on Sunday, p1, 10 September 2000)

There is no plan to introduce a tax on phones. The Commission was obliged to conduct a study into the feasibility of new sources of funding, so-called ‘Own Resources’, for the EU’s budget. A ‘Communications Tax’ is referred to but was deemed flawed. It remains the case that there is no current need for any new Own Resources – existing resources are sufficient to finance EU expenditure plans.
