EC to build £900 million tower for staff

March 11th, 1993

Myth: EC taxpayers might soon be forking out for a 3,200 ft, £900 million tower to house some   20,000 European Community bureaucrats.  Several EC Commissioners are reputedly in favour of this.

Response: Any building for the Commission to rent is the responsibility of the Belgian Government. It would therefore have nothing to do with the European Commission or with “European Community officials”.

As a matter of fact we understand that the Belgians are refurbishing the old Berlaymont building at present. The Commission has made one sole request to the Belgian Government on this matter; that the Berlaymont or any building that may replace it corresponds to the necessary hygiene and security norms.
