EC to push for euro-wide license plates

September 25th, 1994

Myth: The European Commission is to change the face of number plates across the EU by insisting that they all have black letters on a white or yellow background, and that each plate has a European flag in the top left hand comer and a letter denoting the country of origin immediately below.

Response: Although the Commission did at one stage do some work on this subject, it never resulted in any concrete action as it was never put before the Council of Ministers, being shelved in the interests of subsidiarity.

As it happens a number of Member States – Portugal, Ireland and shortly Germany – have taken up the Community model on their own initiative.
