EU bans nurses’ traditional belts and buckles

September 27th, 1996

Daily Mail, 27 September 1996, p 31
Daily Express, 27 September 1996, p 5
“An EC directive is forcing hospitals to ban the traditional belts and ornate buckles traditionally worn by nurses”.

This seems like a case of excessive zeal. Neither the Community health and safety legislation nor UK national legislation precludes nurses from wearing buckles.

If it were shown through evaluation that buckles were the cause of accidents or injuries to patients or nurses, it would be sensible to ask nurses not to wear them.
