Letter to Daily Mail on Strict controls on foreign nurses axed by EU diktat

February 9th, 2011

Dear Sirs

The inference that poorly-trained foreign workers will be allowed to work in Britain is misleading, “Strict controls on foreign nurses axed by EU diktat”.

Under EU rules allowing professionals to work anywhere in the EU, once a nurse with qualifications from elsewhere in the EU is recognised in the UK, he or she can practice under the same conditions UK-trained nurses, and must comply with all the obligations laid down for nurses in the UK. Nurses who train outside the EU are not covered by these rules, and it is for the UK to decide how to manage their recognition.

EU legislation governing the recognition of qualifications for medics was introduced to facilitate the free movement of EU qualified professionals seeking work in other member state.

Yours faithfully
