Myth: European Commission hygiene rules will force many UK slaughterhouses to close down.
Truth: There is no reason why this should be the case. All slaughterhouses and abottoirs mustbe licensed under the recently agreed EC meat hygiene regulation but this should not be unduly onerous for the UK. Slaughterhouses which are complying with existing regulations will have no difficulty in meeting the new hygiene requirements. Nearly half of the UK’s meat is already produced in premises meeting these higher stadards and 3 years is allowed for the others to upgrade their premises to meet the new structural requirements. Small abottoirs will face less onerous structural requirements.
