EEPA – Supporting the Development of Green Markets and Resource Efficiency

We are up to Category 5 of our European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) shortlist showcase…have you been keeping up so far?

This week is the turn of the national winners competing in Category 5 – Supporting the Development of Green Markets and Resource Efficiency. These projects have made it onto the shortlist because of their support for policies and initiatives at national, regional or local level that support SME access to green markets and help to improve their resource efficiency. From renewable energy to sustainable development, the top contenders for EEPA Category 5 are tackling important issues and are definitely ones to watch.

1-1-2-young-beekeeper-in-her-honey-bees-farm-city-of-novi-sad-limehoneyThe Lime Trees & Honey Bees for Sustainable Development of the Danube Microregion project in Serbia strengthens the competitiveness of beekeeping in the Fruška Gora region and motivates young people to start beekeeping businesses. The project aims to increase the market share of Fruška Gora lime honey by investing in human resources and skills development, improved knowledge through scientific research, education and the introduction of new technologies. In addition, it ran a high-profile promotional campaign to raise public interest and created a marketing plan that changed the ad hoc approach of 8 beekeeper associations to a value-added, branded product, with export potential. renewable_energy_and_environmental_technologies_fiThe Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies Financial Support Programme is the first regional programme in Turkey to focus on renewable energy and environment. Nine projects dedicated to the design and production of renewable energy systems and environmental technologies were supported, as were 18 solar energy, 6 wind energy and 6 hybrid (solar + wind) systems. At the start of the project there were no systems for unlicensed electricity production connected to the grid in İzmir, making the energy capacity achievements of the programme (8.7 MW) all the more impressive. banner-eepa-blogThe European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) shortlist showcase continues! This week we are introducing you to the national winners competing in Category 4 – Supporting the Internationalisation of Business. These projects have been shortlisted because of their initiatives that encourage enterprises, particularly SMEs, at national, regional and local level to benefit more from the opportunities offered by markets both inside and outside the European Union. The projects come from across Europe, representing Finland, Lithuania and Spain, and cover the themes of: facilitation of business partnerships, improving national competitiveness and practical training and advice for SMEs to thrive in foreign markets.

human_security_finland-zambiaHuman Security Finland (Business opportunities from the Human Security expertise) is a national international development and crisis management business network. It assists with the building of partnerships between Finnish companies and experts aimed at assisting developing countries and crisis-hit regions with solutions to support sustainable development. The network combines business, education and research for human security. 100 organisations are now involved in the concept known as ‘crisis business’, which is based on commercialising human security expertise.

wings_chocolate_naiveYoung export leaders program – WINGS is the first scheme in Lithuania to unite the public and private sectors towards the achievement of one common goal: to promote the country’s  competitiveness through the development of skilled export managers by applying a hands-on approach to meet current market demands. Sixteen graduates were trained in business and export development and management, marketing, business   promotion   and   other   relevant   modern techniques, and gained practical experience through working with SMEs. 23 social initiatives were launched during the programme which generated a value of €650 000. balebila-06Balebila Project – International & Digital Communications for SMEs (Spain) is a practical training and advice programme for innovative SMEs to help them take their businesses to foreign markets. The project provides businesses with tools and advice on communication and public relations strategies through hands-on training. Current successes include; companies that have successfully presented their product to Sir Richard Branson, to those that are now the leading Basque developers for Sony Playstation UK, USA and Asia. Watch these videos to learn about some of the SMEs, like Muka Design Lab & Enigmedia, that the Balebila project has helped. 

The final winner of the category, chosen by  the EEPA Jury, will be revealed in less than four weeks at the EEPA Awards Ceremony during the SME Assembly on 24 November in Bratislava, Slovakia, when the Grand Jury prize-winner will also be announced. Let the countdown begin!

Many countries held national Awards ceremonies to celebrate their national entries, below is an example from Portugal.

The President of the Board of IAPMEI, Professor Miguel Cruz, chaired a Ceremony to announce the 44 national applications in Portugal in July.

The session aimed to:

  • Recognise and thank the commitment of all candidates
  • Promote the visibility of the entries and projects, each candidate also received a participation certificate.
  • Announce and reward the best projects by category and the runners up.
  • Promote and share good practice and promote the European Enterprise Promotion Awards.

By joining this European Commission initiative, IAPMEI aims to promote and share “good practice”. It also aims to widen the visibility of initiatives that work as drivers of entrepreneurial activity in a range of ways, demonstrating the capacity and potential which is key in helping Portugal to become a more competitive country, IAPMEI’s President said.

Miguel Cruz added that due to the investment and growth challenges faced, a growth must rely on the diversification and sophistication of products and services, on markets’ diversification and on a strong trademark.

The session was attended by more than 90 participants, with a large representation of EEPA candidates, and to whom certificates of participation in the “EEPA 2015” were issued.

IAPMEI has been the National Coordinator for the European Enterprise Promotion Awards since its first edition (2006). Thanks to an integrated action plan, a good cooperation with stakeholders and a pro-active demand, IAPMEI succeeds in involving the participation of SMEs and stakeholders committed to sharing good practices resulting in higher levels of competitiveness and entrepreneurship.  Throughout the nine editions of the EEPA, IAPMEI has distinguished approximately one hundred projects in Portugal.
