EEPA – The European Enterprise Promotion Awards, recognises outstanding projects from across Europe that are working to support entrepreneurs and small businesses across six different categories.

EEPA – The European Enterprise Promotion Awards, recognises outstanding projects from across Europe that are working to support entrepreneurs and small businesses across six different categories.

The “Promoting the entrepreneurial spirit” category has once again proved to be the most popular category, receiving 14 entries for the 2018 edition. This category recognises initiatives that promote an entrepreneurial mind-set, especially among young people and women. eCars.bg makes electric mobility easy to understand, desirable and accessible. They produce and distribute EV charging stations, as well as own the largest online media for electric mobility in Bulgaria. In addition they spread their message through the production of a unique TV series featuring Bulgarian celebrities.

Martina Cvetković, Balmaris (Croatia) 

Balmaris uses a system to filter ballast water without the use of chemicals. This reduces the damaging effects of invasive alien species introduced via ballast water that are recorded in the seas all over the world and that are having considerable economic, ecological, and environmental impacts.

Radek Hušek, Sens Foods (Czech Republic)

Sens Foods is looking to use insects to create a whole new range of sustainable, next-gen food products. Using cricket flour, they have developed unique protein and energy bars – gluten and lactose free, with the highest quality protein from crickets and premium natural ingredients.

Margus Kullerkupp, Sol Navitas (Estonia)

Sol Navitas provides living quarters with natural fresh air with the help of solar energy. As a result global air is less polluted because the technology only uses existing solar energy that does not emit CO2 into the atmosphere.

Violeta Masteikienė, FriendsJam (Lithuania)

Friends Jam is an organisation that connects big families with gardeners or arboretum owners. Together they collect the surplus berries and fruits from the year’s harvest. These are then used to either complement the existing food budget for a large family (allowing them to save for other items), or are made into jams which the families can then sell for extra money.

Klaus Conrad, Easy Peasy Coding (Malta)

Easy Peasy Coding uses technology to make children think. Their programs include after-school and joint parent/child classes. The initiative also trains teachers, and provides schools with classroom-ready resources like student workbooks, as well as guidance on how to link coding to core curriculum subjects.

Artur Racicki, SEEDia (Poland)

SEEDiA creates products that gather solar energy. Their solar benches, stands and other products utilise the energy they gather to charge mobile devices (both with USB ports and wireless chargers), Wi-Fi hotspots, heated seats, radio, LEDs and screens.

Flavia Oprea, ENTy (Romania)

ENTy aims to empower Ear-Nose-Throat-doctors to issue data-based assessments. The solution consists in a lighter, portable, lower cost device that generates numerical indicators which are easy to interpret.

Every student of medicine has to pass an anatomy exam, which is considered to be one of the toughest. Virtual Medicine has the following mission: simplified and effective learning of anatomy. This was the reason for which they created the first virtual anatomical classroom, in which students are learning about anatomy using virtual reality.

Ideas from Europe 2017 – Finalists

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden are going to the finals of Ideas from Europe on April 24, 2018 in the Knight’s Hall in The Hague, the Netherlands. The jury found these ideas the most innovative and believe these will have the most impact on our society.

2017 SME Assembly: Ideas from Europe semi-finalists

The winners

This is what the jury, Kaupo Reede, Kristin Schreiber, Ulrike Rabmer Kollen and Cees Vermaas had to say about the ideas:

  1. Julien Penders of Bloomlife (Belgium): “If you are a mother the solution of Bloomlife will give you peace of mind.”
  2. Klaus B. Pederson of Too Good to Go (Denmark): “A practical solution to the second hand market of food.”
  3. Steffen Preuss of Ichò (Germany): “This solution is acknowledging the tremendous problem of dementia and provides a practical device that brings relief.”
  4. Fiona Edwards Murphy of ApisProtect (Ireland): “We need bees to make sure our food supply will last. This solution will help the bee population.”
  5. Aida Nazarikhorram of LuxAI (Luxembourg): “There is a big potential in technology that lets children interact more easily with robots.”
  6. Mark Offerhaus of Micreos (The Netherlands): “This solution is potentially a ground breaking alternative for antibiotics.”
  7. Artur Racicki of SEEDia (Poland): “The combination of something practical and modern that will help both us and the environment.”
  8. Francisco Duarte of PavNext (Portugal): “The combination of safety and energy has great potential.”
  9. Mervi Pänkäläinen of Mightifier (Finland): “This will really stimulate behaviour change and help children fight bullying.”

The Jury have decided that due to them sharing a common objective and similar goals, but with slightly different target audiences, that the Speak Up solution from Sweden will share the stage with Mightifier from Finland at the finals in The Hague.

2017 SME Assembly: Ideas from Europe semi-finalists

The Jury also wanted to highlight another project and give it a special mention. Stefan Steinberger the semi-finalist presenting Refugee{code}, will also be joining the finalists at the Hague due to his solution being so relevant to the current refugee crisis.

Wildcard

From November 23 onwards, the wildcard vote for the last finalist will be open to the public. They will be able to vote online via http://ideasfrom.eu/vote for one of the other nineteen solutions that were not chosen by the jury.

The innovator with the most votes will then go on to join the other finalists in the Knight’s Hall in The Hague, The Netherlands on April 24, 2018.

EEPA National Winners 2017 – Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship

Have we met all of the projects competing for a place on the EEPA 2017 European shortlist? Almost! Today Promoting Enterprise presents the final category of national winners, Category 6: Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship. This category recognises initiatives that promote corporate social responsibility among small and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups such as the unemployed, legal migrants, disabled, or people from ethnic minorities.

In 2016 the prize was won by The Rotterdam Business Case from the Netherlands, for their project that strives to help innovative individuals and entrepreneurs who have failed with a venture or are in financial difficulties.

10 projects will be considered for a European title in this category. Well done to all the national winners and we look forward to finding out who is on the EEPA 2017 shortlist!

EEPA National Winners 2017 – Supporting the internationalisation of business

We have already met the national EEPA winners from Categories 1, 2 and 3…time for Category 4: Supporting the internationalisation of business! This category recognises initiatives that encourage enterprises and particularly small and medium-sized businesses to benefit more from the opportunities offered by markets, both inside and outside the EU. In 2016 the prize was won by Human Security Finland for their project that tackles a key issue high on the global agenda, human suffering.

2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA). In this new feature, we catch up with former EEPA honourees who’ve gone on to do great things since winning the award.

What was it like to win the award?Malgorzata Pliszka

It was a great feeling to experience the joy and the appreciation of our efforts together with my colleagues. The award was a great surprise and a great honour.

Tell us about your project.

The project, “Construction of houses by means of a training system for unemployed persons” began in the period in which the labour market in the region of Nysa suffered a deficit of qualified construction workers. At the same time, at the District Labour Office in Nysa, we had over 2,000 people registered as unemployed, without professional qualifications, who were mostly unemployed for many years. Moreover, individual local governments in the Nysa region had problems with a lack of financial resources for construction of houses / social flats. The idea to build a real house during training seemed to be a great idea to create effective and socially responsible training programmes.

How did winning the award immediately impact your work?

It resulted in huge interest from both the media and other organisations. We presented our success story at many conferences and meetings. The project has been widely featured in both local and national media. Many organisations took up the challenge and duplicated our actions.

What response did you receive from your colleagues and peers?

Congratulations and words of appreciation.

What has been the long-term impact?

The long-term impact is a perception of our institution as a professional organisation working hard to help people at risk of social exclusion and unemployed families. Another long-term effect on the project is that we’ve built informal partnerships with institutions working to help the unemployed.

Why did you decide to enter the national competition?

We realised that the project was a kind of experiment, an innovative action that we wanted to share with others. We thought that our work was worth sharing and, ultimately, imitating, and it deserved to be showcased in a big forum.

How did you go about preparing your application and making it award winning?

Our project was described in a comprehensive way; we showed the benefits that were the result of its implementation, both the immaterial aspect of equipping participants with the skills and training that enabled them to take up employment, as well as the material result of the project, which was the creation of a residential building.

What advice would you give to others thinking of entering?

Don’t be afraid to shout about what you’re doing.

Are you a Poland-based organisation that works with entrepreneurs to encourage the growth of enterprise? Do you want to receive national and European recognition for your work?

If yes, then be sure to enter the Polish national competition for the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) by Saturday, 21 May.

According to the national coordinators, interest in the competition this year has been fierce, which is reflective of how the awards tap into the current state of entrepreneurship. “The competition categories reflect significant social and economic challenges faced by local and regional communities in Poland,” says Marcin Zembaty from the Polish national coordinating team, who believes that the EEPA provide a great opportunity to discover innovative new projects nationwide. “We’re keen on learning whether new ideas and their practical implementation are happening across the country and seeing how people are encouraged to engage their potential, and enhance the wellbeing of local communities. Successful new ideas in one place can often be adapted by others elsewhere.”

Why should an organisation apply to EEPA?

The main benefit of entering the competition is the opportunity to be get known and increase the visibility of your project. Another benefit is that this can allow for more effective mutual learning regarding the challenges mentioned above.

What has been the response so far?

We’ve had around twenty queries since we the competition was launched at the beginning of March. A similar number of queries may also have been directed to Regional Self-government offices.

How have you promoted the competition so far? Have you worked with any partners?

We cooperate with Regional Self-Governments (Urzędy Marszałkowskie) in disseminating information as they have regular contact with lower level public authorities in their regions (i.e. with counties and communities). We also ask partners and stakeholders to promote the competition on their websites and in their newsletters. I think this cooperation has worked quite well so far. In addition, we’ve also placed advertisements in two national newspapers.

Patryk Strzelewicz - Game Technologies

At Game Technologies, we strive to invent and create products that do not exist in the market. In the last few years, we have achieved this twice. Our lead product is the most technologically advanced game controller in the world called DICE+. The dice is used to play interactive board games on a tablet or computer. The dice itself is a tiny device (only 25 grams in weight) packed with 60 individual components, all of which are produced in the European Union. We are one of a few hundred companies that will receive an R&D grant this year from the EU.

If I were Minister for SMEs and start ups, I would consistently promote the gaming industry, especially at international trade fairs.

European Enterprise Promotion Awards 2014: Winners announced

The seven winners of the eighth annual European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) were announced in Naples at the SME Assembly, which is the cornerstone of European SME Week.

The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Encouraging Business Start-ups by Mothers with Young Children, a Hungarian project that seeks to help mothers develop the skills and mind-set to launch and run successful businesses. It offers online resources and training programmes. The project also holds the Entrepreneurial Women’s Roundtable to help mothers navigate the world of business and build relationships with one another.

Winners in the six official categories included organisations from Lithuania, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal. These and many other initiatives encompassed areas as diverse as technology, sustainability and textile and proposed innovative solutions to a range of issues from pollution to lack of corporate social responsibility.
